Five Star Storage

My boxes were at my PO box, some were in my car, and I was in dire need of storage when I arrived in Sioux Falls, SD, from El Paso, Texas, last week. Due to its proximity to my lodging, I went with the Teem Dr. location. Meet James, the site manager. This dude truly enjoys what he does and was very professional. James gave me a detailed explanation of the policy and operating hours, going over each storage unit's size from A to Z when I signed up for a new one. He even informed me about the surrounding area and Sioux Falls in general. The facility is flawless, both inside and out. Here's the good news: the facility has a number of different sizes and shapes of dollies that the customers can use for free. Previously, I had a storage unit in Central Ohio once, and I rented a dolly from Home Depot for 25 USD for 4 hours, plus driving to pick the dolly up and drop it off—a terrible experience. In my humble opinion, Five Stars is lucky to have James on their team.

Editing to clarify: We have had a storage unit here for almost since the place opened. We store business supplies and equipment on site. Never had any issues until it was bought out by Five Star Storage out of North Dakota. Firstly, the app they switched to for opening the gate, well the app was terrible. It did not work 70% of the time. Had to resort to using the key pad to enter the facility. Secondly, since Five star took over, the rates have increased exponentially. We had a month to month contract, and are the customer who in December, pre-pays for the next year. Imagine our surprise to find out in October (2023 or 2024), we suddenly had a balance due to because they arbitrarily increased the rates. Thirdly, due to the jump in expenses, we made the decision to move our supplies to a different location. We vacated our unit the end of September 2025. Emailed Five star to let them know, they confirmed everything was good to go. Since we vacated in September, we are owed 3 months of rent which was pre-paid. Fourth, the lack of customer service. There is no local person to contact. Every time we call its to a center in North Dakota. They struggle to find our account, give us the run around. Last time I called they had the excuse of some newly implemented system. I had to retrieve my emails from September 2025, and even then they said they would have to check the old system, but they typically don't issue refunds. They said they would look into it and get back to me. It's been a month, and so far.... only crickets. So, if you do choose to rent from them..... While their fence and buildings are nice, their customer service is severely lacking. Be prepared for them to illegally keep your money, not remember who you are as a paying client, and having to spend unreasonable amount of time on the phone trying to resolve issues.

Bill is an incredibly helpful guy and very friendly. This property is exceptionally clean. They only had one climate controlled unit available in the size I wanted so I tried to reserve it in advance. I had some difficulty with the website so I called and he held it for me manually and waived the reservation fee. He also waived the 20 admin fee when I purchased a lock from them, which I needed anyway. When I encountered a problem with the self service kiosk he made a special trip in to open the office just for me. The location is very clean and well maintained. All of the units are protected by individual alarms and the climate controlled aspect keeps my items safe from temperature and humidity. I had a very positive experience with this location and would recommend them to anyone.
