SmartStop imposed a rent increase of approximately 60% - 65% without providing any effective notice. The only notification they claim was sent was a postcard mailed to a prior address, despite my current email, phone number, and mobile app account being active and on file. I received no digital communication at all about this increase. What makes this especially problematic is how quickly and aggressively penalties escalate if you don’t immediately comply. There is effectively no reasonable window to dispute the increase. Within a short period, customers are threatened with late fees, additional penalty charges, over-locking of their unit, potential credit reporting, and ultimately the sale of their personal belongings. Once that process starts, the customer has virtually no leverage left. Attempts to resolve this issue professionally were met with rude, dismissive, and unprofessional behavior. Customer service representatives were unhelpful, escalation requests dragged on, and corporate support abruptly ended the call rather than addressing the issue. This was not an isolated interaction, but a consistent pattern when questioning billing practices. This structure creates an environment where customers are pressured to comply under threat, rather than given a fair opportunity to resolve legitimate disputes in good faith. Anyone considering storing important or irreplaceable property here should fully understand how quickly fees escalate and how difficult it is to get respectful, meaningful support once a problem arises.

Price went up $100 after only 4 months. Talked to an employee and he said it will go up every 4 months and the only way around it is to move into a new unit before it goes up. No notice was sent, nothing in my email or app, just a huge hike in price. Will be moving out before the end of my month’s lease and will never recommend SmartStop to anyone ever. Great option if you have unlimited money for quarterly increases or if you only need a unit for a very short time. Wish I could leave 0 stars.
